Windspire Energy is a manufacturer and distributor/installer of renewable energy products such as the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). Windspire has been actively involved in many different installations of VAWTs around the country.
Reno, New Orleans, the Cincinnati Zoo, Quinnipiac University, West Sacramento, St. Croix, Washington D.C. and a church in Indiana- these are just some of the projects that Windspire has been involved in. Windspire has installed products in many different areas including green buildings, government buildings, schools, residential, agriculture and parks & museums.
You can see how the Windspire vertical axis wind turbines work by going to Windspire’s photo and video page. Here you can find photos and videos of nearly all Windspire products and installations.
The Windspire vertical axis wind turbines stand only 30 feet tall and are only four feet wide so they take up very little room. Often several of these turbines are installed within a close proximity of each other to create a “mini wind farm.” Because of their size they are able to be installed in urban, suburban and rural environments.
Windspire is based in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, but they have installations across the country as more and more cities and companies try new and innovative ways to go green. In some areas, power companies allow the excess electricity (if there is any) to flow back into the grid and you can actually “sell” the electricity produced by the wind turbine.
The turbines are a Darrieus design, where the lift generated by wind moving across the blades causes the turbine to turn. The power that is created from this action is then passed on to the building or structure that the turbine is connected to. The stronger the wind blows, the more energy that is produced.
The monopole that the turbines are installed on comes in lengths of 5, 10, 15 and 20 feet. Each Windspire turbine will produce approximately 2,000 kWhs annually.
Windspire vertical axis wind turbines are eligible for a 30% tax credit from the United States federal government. This credit is 30% off the entire turbine including installation. In some areas buyers may be eligible for local rebates up to $4,800.
The turbine can get started in wind as low as 10 mph and work best in free, unobstructed air flows above 11 mph. As this turbine operates at lower wind speeds than many other turbines, and because of its height and increased visibility, it is considered safe for birds and bats.
There are two versions of the Windspire vertical axis wind turbines- the standard wind unit 1.2 kW and the high wind unit 1.2 kW. The high wind unit is designed for areas where there may be frequent high winds.
